A relationship is the way in which two or more concepts, objects, or people are connected. Relations have always been a theme throughout my photography. I study the way that other people cope with one another and their situations, always trying to be objective and understand how people establish and build relationships.
The bond between two people or a person and an object is striking. These bonds come about through certain memories that the person went through. It is the connectivity between people and objects that is really fascinating. It is then about the reference between the viewer and the subject which is where the art comes to life. That the image might possible be a referent for something in the viewers life. These relationships provide a strong backing to the subjects past. In my book titled, Im Thinking Back, I had images that referenced my childhood because I found a fundamental relationship between my best friend and myself. These images had a sense of dreamlike nostalgia and mimicked an age of youth and innocence. This work was not taken with a documentary style. To work as a documenter is far too simple, the lives of the subjects would not be accurately portrayed.
To truly archive peoples lives an artist needs to create a bond with the subject himself, that bond will then allow the conversation to blossom. In the Remembrance series the subject is holding an object that that allows the viewer to peer into an intimate moment of the subjects life. Through their public offering, the subject is opening their personality to the viewer. From here intimate details can be revealed. It is from this point that the object will have two or more referents outside of the image itself. Yet all are built off interpersonal relationships from past experiences.
